Meta's New Smart Glasses Got a Subtle Name Change. It Speaks Volumes About What's Wrong With Them
Having left competitors in the shade by adhering to vital lessons on what works on your face, Mark Zuckerberg has reverted to old habits with Meta Ray-Ban Display--and that's not good. In the early days of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and his team famously adopted the motto "Move fast and break things." Posters with the phrase reportedly adorned the company's Silicon Valley headquarters, alongside other, similar sentiments like "Done is better than perfect," and "Fail quicker." The focus for the young company was clear: Being first was more important than getting it right first time. As the company grew, Zuckerberg--in an interview with WIRED -- started to distance himself from, or at least temper, those mantras.

The FBI Still Hasn't Cracked NYC Mayor Eric Adams' Phone
Pig butchering, the crypto-based scammer scourge that has pulled in an estimated 75 billion from victims globally, is spreading beyond its roots in Southeast Asia, with operations proliferating across the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and West Africa. The UK's National Crime Agency disclosed new details about the identities of the Russian ransomware group known as Evil Corp--as well as the group's ties to Russian intelligence agencies and even its direct participation in espionage operations targeting NATO allies. A WIRED investigation revealed how car-mounted automatic license plate reader cameras are capturing far more than just license plates, including campaign yard signs, bumper stickers, and other politically sensitive text, all examples of how a system for tracking vehicles threatens to become a broader surveillance tool. In other news, ICE signed a 2 million contract with Paragon Solutions, a known vendor of spyware including the hacking tool Graphite. And the Pentagon is increasingly adopting handheld controllers for weapons systems in an effort provide more intuitive interfaces to soldiers who have grown up playing Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses do the AI thing without a projector or subscription
The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have been something of a pleasant surprise. They make videos, take photos, livestream and act as an adequate replacement for headphones, all while looking like a normal pair of sunglasses. However, everyone's been waiting for the addition of multimodal AI after early access testing began in January. What is multimodal AI? Simply put, it's a toolset that allows an AI assistant to process multiple types of information, including photos, videos, text and audio. It's an AI that can view and understand the world around you in real time.
Everything announced at Meta Connect: Quest 3 release date, smart glasses and Meta AI
Meta has just wrapped up its 2023 Connect keynote. As promised, the company had a lot more to share about its Meta Quest 3 headset. It also announced the latest pair of smart glasses it created in collaboration with Ray-Ban. In an astoundingly shocking turn of events, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also had some AI updates to discuss. Meta first showed off the Quest 3 back in June to preempt Apple's announcement of the Vision Pro. However, we had to wait a few months to get all of the details about Meta's mixed reality headset (which we've already had some hands-on time with).
